The Adoquin
The Adoquin is located in the area of Playa Principal. It use to be the place to go at night and hang out but since Puerto Escondido has grown it is now only one of the few places people go at night. The other main place to hang out at night is Playa Zicatela. The Adoquin is a tourist street that has everything a tourist street should have. It is closed to automobile traffic after about 4:00 p.m. and there are restaurants, clothes stores that sell everything from T shirts to bikinis and other beach wear to local typical dress, and there are pharmacies, liquor stores (The store at the east end of the Adoquin has a relatively large selection of wine) and money exchange places. You can buy local hand crafts and jewelry and bric-a-brac. On this short street there are also stores that sell fine cigars and cheap cigarettes. If you need a place to sleep there are hotels that cater to the budget minded all the way up to the high rollers. Some of the restaurants have been there for a very long time. The San Angel and Los Crotos are a couple eateries that were there in the early 1970s and probably much earlier than that. They are also a couple of the best restaurants.
Other places to eat that have been located on the Adoquin for a long time are Bananas, The Spaghetti House, The Flaming Pearl (La Perla Flamante), and the Junta al Mar. La Galleria is a good place to eat and is located across the street from Junta al Mar. La Galleria as you might be able to guess sells art right off their walls. There are a couple of other art galleries on the Adoquin as well because there are some very good artists that call Puerto Escondido home. La Galleria offers Italian fare and has a nice bar to grab a shot of mezcal while you are cruising the Adoquin. There are also smaller restaurants that have very good food for very little dinero. A couple of these are owned by the families of fishermen. They are kind of a secret spot to have some of the freshest fish in the world because as soon as the fishermen come back with their catch they throw it on the stove and then it is on somebody's plate. These little holes-in-the-wall are also popular for a cheap, delicious Mexican breakfast.
If you are a night person there are a few bars/discotheques that don’t get going until after 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. and close around sunup. And if you need to send some email and ask for more money from home to extend your stay in Puerto, there are a few internet cafés that don’t serve coffee. At night, street vendors set up their little area where anybody can find hand made trinkets, useful household items, jewlry, clothes, and many other types of junk. The people that come to visit the Adoquin are young, old, rich, poor, big, little, curious , bored, hungry and well fed. It is a perfect place to sit and watch people after your evening meal. It is possible to spot people from all over the world on this short walk street and make friends that you will have for the rest of your life. From the Adoquin you can walk to Playa Pricipal, Zicatela, The Mercado, to Puerto Angelito and Carrizalillo. It seems that you can walk to just about anyplace in Puerto Escondido from the Adoquin. Maybe that is why it was the central location in town.
