El Sol de la Costa Editor and Publisher
Warren Sharpe publishes and edits the English/Spanish newspaper El Sol De la Costa. Warren has been coming to Puerto Escondido since 1972 if his memory serves him. He returned year after year until the mid 1990s. It was at this time that he decided to make a permanent move to Puerto with just the shirt on his back, a few pesos in his pocket and more experience than he is willing to admit to.
The paper was started soon after his arrival and has been published every month since. Many people depend on the paper for restaurant ideas and for information about what events that will take place in the upcoming month. Some people look to see what the real estate market is like or to see if there is a car for sale in the classified section. I look to see if there will be a surf contest and what the tides are going to be. I also check out older issues online to get ideas for someplace to go visit.
Mexico has many holidays and Warren has all the information about what the different holidays are all about. I didn't know what the Day of the Taxi Driver was all about until I read it in El Sol De la Costa. This guy who has more knowledge about Puerto Escondido than many locals who's family have been here for generations takes side trips out of town from time to time to check out the happenings in the nearby towns. There is always information about events or places that normally would be missed if you didn't check El Sol de la Costa for the month.
When you come to Puerto Escondido one of the first things you should do is check out El Sol De la Costa and see what is going on in town. Get an idea about a side trip and see where you are going to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. Then you can see what holidays are coming up and what events are on the menu for the month. After you have been here for a few days and are settled in, go by Warren's office and say hello. He would be happy to share some of his wealth of information with you and maybe you can give him some news that he hasn't heard yet. Maybe he will serenade you with "House of the Rising Sun"
